Hello Kitty pendant makes instant 50,000-dollar sale in Japan

A diamond-studded Hello Kitty pendant costing 50,000 dollars was snatched up in a mere two minutes by a man who travelled hundreds of miles to buy the gift for his daughter - and paid in cash.

The middle-aged man carrying a black Chanel bag appeared at 10:02 am, two minutes after the central Tokyo outlet of Mitsukoshi department store opened.

Despite the price tag of 5.7 million yen (50,000 dollars) including tax, the man said he came early as he was worried other consumers might also want the pendant in the shape of the hugely popular feline character.

The man, who travelled hundreds of kilometers (miles) from his home in western Fukui prefecture, said he wanted the pendant, studded with diamonds with a ruby ribbon and sapphire nose, as a surprise present for his daughter.

But he had an agonizing eight minutes as Mitsukoshi waited until 10:10 am to confirm no other customers would rush in to fight for the pendant, witnesses said.

After securing the gift, the man, who did not give his name, bought a Hello Kitty pochette - for a mere 200,000 yen.

The quick sale would not be a big surprise for Kitty fans, as Mitsukoshi's Osaka store sold a diamond-studded, platinum Hello Kitty figurine for 10.5 million yen last November.

Hello Kitty, which started in 1974 as a moonfaced cartoon cat on a coin purse, has emerged into a global icon of cuteness with about 50,000 different products on sale in 60 nations.

Beebe jeweler wins four contests at convention

A Beebe jeweler swept away the competition at the Arkansas Jeweler Association's annual awards ceremony held in Little Rock August 13.

A silver charm bracelets and pendants crafted by Lyndall "Lyn" Edwards won the association's four contests.

It's a David and Goliath story,

said Edwards, owner of Edwards Jewelry Bench in Beebe.

Edwards said this was the first year his jewelry competed in the trade convention.

A bracelet and two pendants Edwards crafted edged out submissions by larger jewelry outlets, said President Lori Blagg of the Arkansas Jewelers Association.

Judges presented three different awards to Edwards for jewelry pieces he entered in categories that are based on the price of the metals and jewels used. All jewelers present voted to award Edwards and a fellow craftsman a fourth prize, the convention's choice design award. Edwards and Faye Rodgers of Clinton share their peers' accolade for a white gold and diamond pendant that Rodgers designed and Edwards crafted, Blagg said.

Blagg said the pendant will compete in New York at the National Jewelers of America Design Contest before being sold.

Blagg called Edwards' unusual attention to detail the most distinguished characteristic of his work.

So many jewelers get in and get out,

Blagg said. "[Edwards] puts the extra detail in it."

While Edwards is pleased with the results he said he didn't see any of his winning pieces as particularly outstanding.

"It's what I do every day," Edwards said. "I get kind of nonchalant about it."

Edwards, who did not attend the convention, heard the news of the awards he won while at his workbench crafting a wedding ring.

Edwards said that he crafted the three winning pieces with the same level of care as he devoted to any of his wedding bands now worn on countless fingers across White County.

Edwards' jewelry business in Beebe dates back to 1996, but he crafted his first ring decades earlier as a seventh grader in middle school. His interest in stones derived from his mother, a geologist, who introduced her son to the mineral world.

My whole life was a field trip,

Edwards said.

If there was a question about earth science [my mother] knew it.

Edwards has also worked as a jeweler in Searcy and in Fayetteville, where, after working in a jewelry store by day, Edwards would craft his own pieces at night.

I began having more work at home than I had at the store,

Edwards said.

I let them go and I haven't been on the clock since 1986.
